Its Derby Time!

PACK 961 PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

Car specifications
1. With not to exceed 2 ¾ inches.
2. Length not to exceed 7 inches.
3. Height not to exceed 3 inches.
4. Wheel separation is to be 1 ¾ inches (original width of block).
5. Clearance under the car should not be less than 3/8 inch.
6. Wheelbase is to be 4 ½ inches ( original grooves on block ca be used ).
7. Weight not to exceed 5 ounces as weighed on scales certified by the Pack Pinewood Derby Committee.


Rules
1. The car must be made during the current derby year.
2. The car must be made of the Official B.S.A. pine block, wheels, and axles supplied by the pack or purchased at the Scout Shop ONLY!
3. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings, and hub caps are prohibited.
4. Car shall not ride on any type of springs.
5. Car must be freewheeling, with no starting or propulsion devices or magnets.
6. No loose materials of any kind are to be in the car ( lead shot, weights, etc. MUST BE GLUED IN!!
7. Only dry graphite may be used & it may only be applied prior to registration. NO LIQUID LUBRICANTS!
8. Graphite is to only be applied OUTSIDE the building to keep the Pack in the good graces of the School.
9. No soft materials (such as plumbers putty) are allowed in the car.
10. WHEELS MAY NOT BE MODIFIED OR CANTED. THE FULL UNMODIFIED WIDTH OF ALL WHEELS MUST REST ON THE TRACK. WHEELS MAY BE SANDED TO REMOVE SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS BUT MUST REMMAIN FLAT.
11. If any part of the car falls off, other than the wheel, it may not be put back on.
12. If a wheel falls off , “ the scout” may put it back on without the use of tools or glue. Adult volunteers in the garage area will assist the scout if they are asked to.
13. Competitors are only to handle their own cars.
14. There will be no practice runs made prior to the race. ( There will be test cars run on the track to ensure track alignment prior to the race, this will be done by track officials with cars that are not competing ).
15. Lane rotation racing will be used, to ensure each boy more trips down the race track.
16. TO HELP EVERYONE REGISTER IN A TIMLEY MANNER,ONCE YOU SUBMITT YOUR CAR FOR INSPECTION, THE FIRST TIME IT PASSES INSPECTION YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR CAR BACK UNTIL AFTER YOU ARE FINISHED RACING. SO MAKE SURE IT IS HOW YOU WANT IT BEFORE YOU SUBMIT IT!!!! THERE WILL BE TEST SCALES AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO CHECK YOU WEIGHT BEFORE SUBMITTING FOR INSPECTION.
17. We will be using the Official B.S.A. alignment tool / gauge to inspect all cars.
18. Scouts should be in uniform!
19. If a car jumps the track or leaves the racing surface / area and interferes with apothecary the race will be re-ran. If no interference occurs the race will not be re-ran.

Note:
All efforts will be made to ensure a fun and fair race for all scouts. In case of a dispute regarding the result of any heat or car inspection, the decision of the Pack Pinewood Derby Committee will be FINAL! Unscoutlike behavior by any competitor or adult will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification of the scout.

Remember this as about a Scout and his parents building a car and learning together as a team and having fun. Remember that honesty and trustworthy are two points of the Scout Law that we all need to remember and follow to make this fun for everyone.
